COURSE DESCRIPTION: INTEGRATING THE GODDESSES WITHIN
Drawing on the work of Jean Shenoda Bolen, this course will explore “goddess archetypes” which exist within each of us, regardless of age, gender or culture. The course will begin with an overview of “the history of the goddess” and will focus on contemporary manifestations of the divine feminine in the modern world. From there, you will get to identify those “goddesses” which are active within you and the ways in which these archetypes influence your decisions, shape your actions and affect your relationships. Persephone, for example, may lead you into the underworld and when combined with the spontaneity and seductiveness of Aphrodite, can be a very dangerous archetype. Artemis, on the other hand, will help you set goals and achieve great tasks, but unless coupled with the compassion of Demeter or the loyalty of Hera, she may not be very helpful at nurturing significant relationships. As you explore the goddess archetypes within, you will learn to see the ways in which they are help and hinder you in daily life. Through conversation with other participants, you will learn how others, too, have been affected by these potent forces. Following this, you will get to map out new strategies for creating balance and harmony in your life. No preparation is needed for this course, but if you go to YouTube and enter “Elizabeth-Anne Stewart” you will find Somedayfire's mini videos on Woman Dreamer, Exploring the Goddess, Cosmic Responsibility and Naming the Divine. You may also want to read Jean Shenoda Bolen’s Goddesses in Every Woman (Harper & Row, 1984). Copies of Dr. Stewart’s poetry book, Woman Dreamer, will be available for purchase ($10).

DATE: Thursday, August 28th, 2008; 7:00-9:00 p.m. COST: $30/ $25 if paid 10 days in advance.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: PITFALLS IN THE FAST LANE
Today, more than ever before, the stresses of modern life, not to mention the impact of 9/11, have caused havoc in the work place. Corporate downsizing and restructuring, together with job insecurity and the floundering economy, have left employees on edge. Fearing for their own positions yet experiencing guilt when colleagues are laid off or forced into early retirement, employees often find it hard to invest in their job or to create a positive atmosphere in the company. Some take out their frustrations in complaining and passive aggressive behavior; others become depressed, turn to addictive substances or, in worst case scenarios, resort to violence. In addition to work-related stresses, employees often bring personal issues to work: ill health, the possibility of foreclosure, massive credit card debt, the death of a loved one, marital breakdown, the burden of caring for aging parents, the heartbreak of dealing with adolescent rebellion.... These represent a few of the problems which typically have a negative impact on morale. This course will help you find comfort, peace and the resolve to come to terms with your situation. Whatever your religious background, you will learn spiritual solutions to everyday problems in the work place. Without resorting to cliches or trivial theological statements, the course will offer many practical solutions for a healthier and happier work place, especially stress management tools. If you are an employee, you will experience increased self-awareness, a holistic view of personal needs and a stronger sense of empowerment; if you are in a management position, you will learn greater flexibility and creativity in terms of dealing with employee issues.  This will establish a more fertile environment for productivity and new ideas in an employee-friendly atmosphere.

Participants will:
1. identify key issues at work which create a negative work environment
2. identify key personal issues which contribute to a negative work environment
3. identify key positive factors in the work place and strategies to build on them
4. learn stress reduction tools such as breath work, meditation, creative visualization, being present to the moment
5. learn creative strategies for problem solving
